Healthy gums are a key component to good oral health. If your gums fall prey to gingivitis or or periodontitis, not only can you lose your teeth, but your jawbones and other parts of your body can suffer as well.

Your dentist can treat you for gum disease, however there are things that you can do on your own to help prevent it.

The most prevalent cause of gum disease is the presence of bacterial plaque in your mouth. When it builds up, your gums will become inflamed. You can reduce plaque by brushing your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Plaque can also be reduced by flossing at least once a day, making sure to floss below the gumline. Keeping your regular appointments with your dentist for cleanings and exams will allow your dentist to remove any plaque that you may have missed during brushing; your dentist can also spot the early signs of gum disease and administer the proper treatment. Tobacco use of any kind will increase your chances of gum disease and oral cancer.

Your diet can also keep your gums healthy. Yogurt, or drinks containing lactic acid have been found to lower the risk for gum disease. Black tea can neutralize the acids and bacteria found in your mouth. You should also get plenty of vitamin C. Vitamin C can be found in oranges, bell peppers, kiwi fruit, strawberries, and even tomatoes.
